Memoirs, notes, copies of letters, and drafts of essays of Charles Russell Codman, soldier and Massachusetts state legislator, prepared by him between 1889 and 1907. Codman was an officer of the Boston Cadet company of the Mass. Volunteer Militia at the beginning of the Civil War, then was commissioned a colonel of the 45th Regiment, Mass. Volunteer Militia. He recounts his service in the Cadets and the 45th Regiment, which was active for nine months in 1862 and 1863. (Con't) After the war Codman served in the state legislature as a Republican, but joined the Mugwumps in 1884 and accepted the Democratic nomination for Congress in 1890. He writes of political events in Massachusetts and the nation in the last half of the 19th century and recalls his personal interviews with Carl Schurz and President Grover Cleveland. Among Codman's speeches are two delivered to the Mass. Reform Club, which he served as president.
